View Full Version : What cards do you guys use?

What cards does everyone here like to use?
What are the ones that you use on a regular basis?
Do you have some that you like to use to show off with?
Personally, I use regular Bike's for practice and the White and Silver Bikes anytime I show tricks to people.

I use red bikes and some blue here and there.
I have a black tiger deck, and a masters which was given as a gift, they're put away now because they're old and unusable.
I have a deck of lack backed bikes as well which were given as a gift...those I use exclusively for one trick, known as the "Underground Vanish"
I also want to get my hands on some tally ho's (Can't find them anywhere)
Some guardians too and maybe some Jerry's, if I can find them very cheap somewhere by chance...

I like to use Vintage Bikes for performances, mainly because I like the look of them. I use regular Bikes to practice with and occasionally perform with. I prefer using Studs to perform though, because the finish is nicer in my opinion, and they seem to last longer than normal Bikes. I am pretty pumped about getting me some Guardians though. :)

I have:
Tons of Bicycles (Red, blue) 50 or so of them.
Tally Ho's (Red, Blue, Vipers, both back designs)
Split Spades
Nuggets
Black Tigers
Ghosts
Series 1800's
A couple of vintage decks
A couple of masters, (both red and blue)
And probably more I can't think of.
For performance I either use Red / Blue Tally Ho's or Bikes. If I know the person I'll use Black tigers or Vipers. The reason being, if the spectator sees an awkward deck or cards, he or she will usually think it is gimmicked in some sort of way, even if it isn't.

I hate to sound like I'm hopping on a band wagen here, but honestly I think that I'll be using the Gaurdians exclusively depending on how they feel. They already look great, so once I test em' out I'll be able to say it with more security.
Before then, however, I stuck to Masters.

I got started in Card Magic about a year ago and have experimented with many decks:
Bikes (Red,Blue,Ghost,Black Tigers, Masters, 1800's)
Tally's (Red,Blue,Vipers)
I've also dabbled with Rio Casino Decks (Obviously some limitations)
I practise and perform solely with Red/Blue Tally's. For some reason, they just break-in more quickly, and I'm more comfortable with them. They also wear out alot faster... But they are cheap when you order them in bulk:
http://www.kardwell.com/tally-ho.htm
On another note, I Love the look and feel of the Black Tiger/Tally Viper/Ghost deck. But like I hate it when someone says "Are those Magic Cards", or "Hey, Cool Cards". Immediately they think something is up, which may or may not be what you are trying to achieve.

I use nothing but red backed jumbo index cards. They are large and annoying.. like me. (And I can do a trick with the card box that freaks non-magicians out)
Personally I find adhearing to one particular type of cards actually helps you because it puts limitations on your options and forces you to be more creative.

You'll generally find me with any of the following on a regular basis;
Tally Ho Circle Backs (blue)
Bicycle Rider Backs
Arrco US Regulation
Studs
So really, I use anything that is "normal" to a laymen.
^ But what is the definition of 'normal'? - I imagine that would be anything that looks not too "out of the ordinary" as would a Black Tiger for example.

Just the basics, my favorites are Black Tigers and 1800's.
Red and Blue Bikes (20-30 of them)
Ghosts
Black Tiger
Series 1800
Red Masters
Best ones to use in real performances?, normal bikes. Why? People think all different color looking cards are gimmicked.

I've already commented on the cards I've used but wanted to ask questions to others.
Did your Black Tiger decks become all sticky and the black edges of the card start to fade and become all white? I had only used mine for 6 days, keeping it out of hot areas, in the box at all times and max having them out for 45 minutes and they just got destroyed.

My favorite is the Blue Ice Deck. It looks awesome. I just ordered a Guardian, so I'll have to use that as well. But usually I tend to stick with just regular Red and Blue Bikes for my performances because no one suspects that there's anything wrong with them, though sometimes there is. I personally don't like the Vipers because their thickness makes it hard to perform sleights. My Ghosts are unusable because they clump up.
Did your Black Tiger decks become all sticky and the black edges of the card start to fade and become all white? I've heard that using a black sharpie on the edges works well. Just make sure to let it dry well.
Cheers,

Wow, I read thru this thread and really only one post (lapping) impressed me with choice of decks, this is sad. I guess I don't know anything, heck I've only been collecting cards for 15-20 years, lol.
Listen folks, play and practise with whatever you want, but always perform with cards people know. Put yourself in their shoes, they are already suspicious of what you're doing, don't make it worse by using Vipers or Black Tigers, or some other space age deck from the latest card retailer. Bikes, Bees, Arrcos, or TH9s are found easily by everyone, and all of them are quality decks. Remember YOU make the cards look good not the other way around.

I agree, to a degree, I personally don't use "special" decks when performing for strangers, but if you display and explain them properly, people won't be suspicious, for me I'm asked if it's a trick deck even if it's a normal deck of bicycles sometimes. I think it's all in the way people portray and introduce the deck to the audience.

After buying a playing with so many brands and looks. I settled on the following list.
1. Masters: They look familiar to all, but the quality gives the Magician the upper hand.
2. Ghost: They are different but not suspicious to most spectators. The front of the cards are white and not black. The red pips are a nice touch and the backs look like normal bikes but white.
I choose not to use Tigers and Vipers because of their black face. Yes, they are beautiful and make a statement, but far too many times the statement I hear is this. "These are trick cards"
I just purchased some Guardians and will wait to gain some experience with them in true performances before I add them to the list. What I do like so far about the Guardians is that they have white faces. The back design is black and beautiful, but the cards still look normal (white) I would guess that these cards will hit my list at number two if they perform the way I predict.
I simply love Masters because I can have them in red and blue which is important for many tricks I perform between the two colors.
Mence.

I prefer using red masters for performing cause i prefer the feel. riders are just a little thin for me. also, unlike vintage and black tiger, people wont tend to be suspicious that its a trick deck.
and of course, everyones favourite gaff deck can be used with it too. (:

well, i have to say i'm into magic/flourishing for only about 4-6 months now, and i haven't quite decided what to use yet. i ordered one deck of some of cards to try, and so far i'm quite sure i'll stick with ghosts as my magic cards. i think they last quite long, and i totally like the look of the white backs. as for practicing, i love tallys. the back designs are amazing. i don't really like the regular bikes, but for me that's all different, because where i live no one has ever seen a deck of bikes because in my country there's a card company that kind of has the monopol, so you don't get any decent cards anywhere. finally, i have to say in my opinion the tigers and vipers look just amazing! unfortunately the edges wear out too fast, but for showing off they're the best!

2-regular bicycles (blue backed)
3-ghost deck, but of course I don't use them that much at all, but when I do, people just love it.
I ordered a block of Guardians, just to check them out, but other then that I am happy with what I use. I will also check out black ghosts and shadows (I always by a "block" of 12). Well the Cardz that I use are the bicycle rider backs to do up close tricks and primarily all my tricks but when flousihing I use tally ho's simply because they are thicker and tend to hold thier contour a lil more than bicycles.

I try to use normal 808 Rider Backs in my performance, as there is no way the specs will think it's a trick deck. However, I have other decks in my collection, such as:
-White & Silver Bikes
-Tally Ho's
-Vipers
-Ghosts
-Black Tigers
-Masters
-Bicycle Twilights
-Bicycle Pro Peek Cards

I've heard of them, but I've never seen them, until today. They have an interesting green aesthetic look. They're being sold (http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-BICYCLE-TWILIGHT-BLUE-GREEN-BACK-PLAYING-CARDS_W0QQitemZ130168686795QQihZ003QQcategoryZ1401 4QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) on eBay, and have a very unique appearance.
With regard to the cards that I'm using, right now, I'm oscillating between the Guardians and regular Bicycle decks.
Cheers,

I use bikes for performance most of the time, because they're normal-looking, even if they aren't too common over here. I'm hoping to get some WPT decks, coz they're cheap, everyone knows them, and they're similar quality. All my other "cool" cards I keep in a box and bring out on special occasions - I'm very protective of my cards. ;)
In my collection:
Bikes
Tigers
Vintage 1800s
Ghosts
Masters
Guardians (1st ed.)
Some old casino bees
(No, I don't have any tally-ho's - please don't hurt me!)

I would love to use ghost or black ghost decks on a regular basis but it is just to expensive for me.
so for me, regular red and blue rider back work just fine ;).
I'm a cheap skate XD

The_Dark_Angel- Obviously somebody else already put up pictures, but just to let you know, these are not rare cards. You should be able to fiind them at your local Target for about $3. I myself picked up two decks... one to keep sealed just in case they ever do become rare, and one to play around with. They are pretty cool looking, and handle about the same as a standard deck of Rider Backs, if not a little better.

Now that you mention it, I think that I have seen these around, but as far as I know, they don't have them near me. :(

I find it interesting that many people have said they practice with one type of deck but perform with something completely different. Not just a different finish, but a different style card and different design all together. I'm only a begginer, but I would think you ought to practice with the same thing you perform with.
I like likes of different types of cards. My favorite are the Ghost decks and Vintage. Once I'm ready though, I think the Masters will by my choice. I like the finish and the sharp look of them. I've whipped out Black Tigers before and the immediate reaction was "cool magic cards". Definately a no go. I will also be using Bicycle's Tactical playing cards (the 535 series). They're plentiful overseas where I deploy.

Hello,
I am new to magic. I can't seem to tell if there is a break in period with a deck of cards used for magic or when they are not fit to use. Some cards are better to use for slieghts because they bend easier. How do know when they are not usable anymore

it's best to use normal red or blue bikes to reduce suspicion
and Tangoking they are not usable when you can't fan right, but I don' waste money so I say that they are not usable when they don't fit in the box (they don't thumb fan right, but you can pressure fan pretty even fans) plus with a deck you thought is worthless if you leave it somewhere for like 3 days it will become good again because all the moist will evaporate from it

I only use Bicycle cards. If I had to choose which style (Ghost, Black Tiger, Masters) I would choose the red pipped Black Tiger. The black and red go well together and make fans look nice.

For some reason I find all my the "custom" Bicycle Decks repulsive. I only like the silver bikes. I've probably already posted here, but what the heck, I've made a few changes.
Right now I prefer to use Aladdins, Tallys, and red and blue Bikes as my standard cards. Masters are also nice. Mavericks are good for flourishing as they stay togther well, but other than that they are horrible for everything. On the topic of "custom decks", I own a Ghost deck (been sitting in my drawer for some time unused), A Viper Deck, and 1st and 2nd Ed. Guardians. I don't really like to use them as they look "gimmicked". If you know where to pick up some Aladdins I suggest you do so, as I believe the finish is nicer than Bikes and they are better to look at.

If my spectators think my cards are gimmicked by using custom cards, I will just shove my cards up their face and say, WHERE IS THE GIMMICK? YEAH THATS WHAT I THOUGHT!! and run away from getting arrested.

Personally i think that using certain cards for practice compared to performance is not smart.
One, the cards you practice with will be broken in more, so inturn that could throw off your peformance. what you need to do is find a brand or type you like and tick with them. I use Bicycles myself, but i have found that Tally Ho's are thicker and more usefull for certain tricks.

Well when I'm at school I usually use plain old rider back bikes because that's what we play poker with. However I do sometimes carry around Tally-Ho Fan backs because I absolutely love them! One time I was performing with a deck of league backs and I did a mental trick where I predicted someone's card after they chose it and shuffled the deck themselves and they were like "Oh maybe the number of spokes on the wheels has something do with it." Nope, sorry. Maybe next time.

Mainly normal bikes--I use ghosts from time to time, probably start using guardians if they are half as good as people who review them say they are (bicycle makes some pretty nice cards and the artists that run this site have high standards...so I'm sure they're nothing short of amazing.)

I go through card phases, so I have tons of different decks. Right now I really like the Bicycle Vintage series, especially Red Fan Backs. Racer Backs and League Backs are excellent as well.
I think my previous phase was Split Spades Lions (blue), and before that I wouldn't touch anything other than Red Rider Backs.
I also use Tallys, Wynns, WPT Diamond Backs, Absoluts, Aladdins, and Jerrys very soon.

I play about with a few different decks - Wynns, various casino cards, standard Bees, "bumble-bee" Bees, Richard Turner's Gamblers, Absoluts, Studs etc., but my current favourites are Arrco US Regs. I find they don't need much in the way of breaking-in, and are in a condition to perform straight out of the box.
My Ellusionist decks are right at the back of the drawer, and I don't think will see the light of day again.

gonna try Guardians and Split Spade Lions soon, and i'll add them to the list if i like them.

I like using the "specialty" cards ie. vipers, ghost, tiger ect. but only for cardistry with a little magic thrown in. If I'm planning to go out to perform magic just a pack of bikes. There is something to be said for just using regular bikes when doing magic. One of the first thing people will accuse you of when using specialty decks is that it was a trick deck. Which in my opinion takes away from the effect. We are supposed to be doing extraordinary things with ordinary objects. Why do you think the gimmick for distortion comes in either red or blue bike backs. If their default reasoning for the effect is that is was a trick deck where is the magic? It then becomes the cards doing something incredible, not you. I've actually come back from doing magic at a party(using specialty decks) and had people say "Hey, do that trick with the trick deck!" I don't know about you but I'd rather be remembered for the magic I'm doing, not the cards I'm holding. Lets be honest guys. The only reason to use specialty decks is that "we" think it looks cool.
